Solynta, a Dutch company, is set to introduce new hybrid potato varieties in Kenya, developed using non-GMO hybrid breeding technology. These varieties will be sold as seeds and seedlings, addressing the challenge of limited access to clean propagation material for Kenyan growers. The potatoes carry genes resistant to Phytophthora, a disease that significantly reduces yields. Solynta's product is disease-free, easy to store, and more economical for farmers. After testing in various African countries, Solynta aims to make these hybrids widely available across the continent.
