The Instituto Agronômico (IAC) of Brazil has developed two new colored potato varieties, IAC Tourmalina and IAC Granada, with purple and red skin and pulp, respectively. These varieties are being cultivated by small and medium potato producers and are selling for up to ten times the price of conventional potatoes. The IAC is also developing two conventional potato varieties, IAC Obelix and IAC Axel, which have high productivity and resistance to diseases. The IAC plans to produce genetic seedlings and seeds using the aeroponics method and licenses the production to companies interested in these new varieties. The new potatoes are expected to be launched this October 15.
