Between 2017 and 2022, Germany experienced a decrease in apple quotas with a 1.45% drop in total acreage and 9.2% of fruit farms ceasing operations. Apples remain the most widely planted fruit trees, occupying 67% of the total area. However, the diversity of apple varieties has increased, with 78 varieties now grown. The majority of these varieties are regionally important, with only 25 varieties grown on over 100 hectares each and fewer than ten covering over 1000 hectares. The top five varieties make up over half of the total area (53%), and the top 10 varieties cover 66% of the acreage.
