(Daejeon=Yonhap News) Reporter Park Joo-young = The Korea Forest Service announced that it will operate the autumn forest fire caution period starting from the 20th due to the increased risk of forest fires during the fall season.
The fall season sees a higher risk of forest fires due to the large number of people hiking, including those visiting for autumn foliage and increased trekkers. Over the past 10 years, the average number of forest fires during the autumn forest fire caution period (from November 1 to December 15) was 39.4, with 13.9 hectares of forest damage.
This year, in preparation for the Gyeongju APEC Summit (October 27 to November 1), the need for establishing a forest fire preparedness stance has increased, leading to the decision to advance the start of the autumn forest fire caution period from November 1 to the 20th.
The Korea Forest Service plans to organize approximately 1,600 rapid response teams across 241 agencies during the autumn forest fire caution period, and maintain 24-hour forest fire response capabilities through night-time firefighting helicopters. The Central Forest Fire Prevention Headquarters will also operate 24 hours a day.
To eradicate forest fires caused by illegal burning, the service will support the shredding of agricultural by-products and distribute reprocessing containers to households using wood boilers in areas adjacent to forests to prevent forest fires.
