Pork production in China grew by 7% in the third quarter of 2025 compared to the same period last year, totaling nearly 14 million tons. The increase occurred after the Chinese government encouraged the slaughter of animals to balance supply and reduce domestic prices. According to Vitor Moura, market analyst and marketing director of the Brazil-China Chamber, the growth reinforces China's leadership in global production. "China holds about half of the world's pig herd and maintains a very strict food safety directive, treating animal protein production as a pillar of national security," says Moura. Even with the increase in production, the excess supply has been putting pressure on prices in the Chinese domestic market.
