The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) is making strides in boosting its agricultural production, particularly in grains and legumes, according to Cem Karaca, Director of the TRNC Agricultural Research Institute. The country has successfully developed two local barley varieties, with more in the pipeline, and has seen promising yields from five peanut varieties. The institute is also conducting breeding studies for wheat and crossbreeding for barley. This progress could help reduce the country's dependence on imports, which currently include an average of 580 tons of peanuts per year.
