Scientists at the Indian Vegetable Institute in Varanasi are developing a grafted plant that produces both eggplants and tomatoes. The plant, named Brimato, yields up to 2.3 kilograms of tomatoes and 2.64 kilograms of eggplant. The scientists plan to graft other vegetables together as well. The eggplant plant is used as a base due to its winter hardiness and both plants are kept in a controlled environment for 5-7 days after grafting. The entire transplant operation takes up to 18 days.
