India is projected to see a rise in cooking oil imports due to the country's growing population, increased per capita consumption, and strong economic growth, positioning it as the world's largest importer of vegetable oils. The country's expected imports for the year include 8.75 million tonnes of palm oil and 3.75 million tons of soybean oil, alongside 2.5 million tonnes of sunflower oil. However, rising transportation and insurance costs from the Black Sea region and a sunflower oil shortage in Argentina might affect these import plans. To mitigate these challenges, India has announced plans to allow duty-free import of 2 million tonnes of crude sunflower oil from the current fiscal year until March 2024, but will cease duty-free imports of crude soybean oil starting from the next fiscal year.
