The State Agricultural Inspection Committee in Astana, Kazakhstan, has taken measures to destroy infected tomato seeds and plant cuttings found to contain the tomato brown wilt virus (ToBRFV) and western flower thrips, following inspections at the "ZhD Astana" Agro-Industrial Complex and a greenhouse in Uralsk. The virus, initially detected in Hungary in 2021, poses a significant threat to tomato crops across the European Union. The inspections led to the destruction of over 2,700 infected seeds, 108 packages of contaminated tomatoes imported from Russia, and 1,320 infected cuttings imported from Kenya. Owners of the contaminated goods were fined, and the infected tomato shipment from Russia was burned.
