In the first quarter of 2024, Italian exports of fresh fruit and vegetables increased by 1.6% in volume and 2.5% in value, while imports also grew, resulting in a trade balance favoring imports by 96,146 tonnes. Citrus fruits performed well, but fresh fruit exports faced challenges with pears and kiwis. Tubers, vegetables, and legumes saw volume growth but a slight drop in value, and dried fruit exports continued to decline. Tropical fruit exports boomed, and apples and kiwis maintained their value despite volume reductions. Concerns were raised about the impact of international crises, particularly in the Middle East, on future trade. Additionally, the Egyptian currency crisis and Central Bank restrictions on foreign currency use are significantly hindering the export of autumn products to Egypt, posing a serious risk to the export campaign and the economy.
