Italy is planning to kill one million wild boars over the next three to five years with military assistance, in order to reduce their population by 60 to 80 percent due to the spread of African swine fever (ASF). This initiative is in response to the threat posed to pig producers, particularly in the Parma region, where the virus could lead to significant economic losses for the Parma ham industry, which generates around EUR 1.7 billion in revenue annually. Authorities and stakeholders are advocating for increased funding for biosecurity measures and calling for the army's support to control the wild boar population, as the virus has been reported in 105 cases in the Emilia-Romagna region.
