In the first half of 2024, Japan's exports of agricultural, forestry and fishery products experienced a decline for the first time since 2020, largely due to China's ban on Japanese seafood purchases, which led to a 43.8% drop in exports to China. This was particularly hard on scallops, with exports falling by 37%. In response, trade associations are seeking to diversify their export markets by exploring opportunities in Asia, the United States, and Europe. Despite the initial setback, China had been Japan's largest seafood export market, with purchases worth 87.1 billion yen in 2022. The Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO) received additional funding to promote Japanese seafood globally and is actively seeking alternative processing locations for scallops to replace the Chinese supply chain.
