Tridge summary

According to the introduction, Laos currently has 269 hectares of durian plantations, totaling 18,957 trees, of which 3,312 trees are in the fruit-bearing period. Driven by the strong demand for tropical fruits in the Chinese market, this 25-year plan will help increase durian production to meet domestic and international market needs. The project aims to introduce scientific cultivation techniques, improve yield, and reduce production costs, making Laotian durians more competitive overseas.

First phase project launched in Vientiane

The project will be piloted in the Huay Kham village of the Sangthong district in Vientiane on 6 hectares of land, specifically establishing a farm to cultivate and nurture high-quality durian trees. Under a cooperative agricultural model, local farmers will be invited to participate in the cultivation and share future profits, thereby improving their livelihoods while building a stronger supply chain.

The project is jointly carried out by the National Agriculture and Forestry Research Institute (NAFRI) of Laos and EK Farm Limited Company, which has experience in modern agricultural techniques. The production methods will be based on the research findings of the Vegetable and Fruit Research Center to ensure the best cultivation practices. On October 7, both parties held a formal signing ceremony, attended by Somdet Bouphakham, Director of the Office of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, and Pooreum Song, General Manager of EK Farm Limited Company.

Durian export target for 2026: 400 tons

Looking ahead, Laos plans to export 400 tons of high-quality durians in 2026, with China being its primary market. Thanks to the China-Laos Railway, the transportation time to China has been reduced to less than two days, significantly lowering transportation costs and ensuring product freshness.

So far this year, the China-Laos Railway has transported 150,000 tons of durians, a year-on-year increase of 91%. A higher proportion of cold chain logistics has enabled Laotian durians to reach more provinces and cities in China, opening up new market opportunities.

With the new cultivation project and improved logistics, Laos is positioning itself as an important player in the regional durian trade, strengthening ties with China while supporting the development of sustainable agriculture domestically.
