In 2024, Hungarian sugar beet producers cultivated on approximately 16.17 thousand hectares, resulting in a total crop of 454,000 tons with an average yield of 54 tons/hectare, marking an increase from the previous year. However, the season was filled with challenges such as drought, late sowing, pests, and leaf diseases, which affected the quality and yield of the crop. The harvest saw one third of the total sowing area, with an expected total yield of 856,000 tons. Despite the challenges, the crop is expected to meet about 35-40% of the country's sugar demand, with the rest being imported. The industry's profitability is crucial for the continuation of sugar beet cultivation, and without significant support, the cultivation would not be sustainable.
