In 2021, meat consumption in Germany fell significantly, with each person consuming 5.5 kg less meat than in 2016, totaling 55 kg per person. The decrease was led by a drop in pork consumption by 5.7 kg per person, while beef consumption remained relatively stable and poultry consumption increased slightly. This resulted in a decrease in the import of meat, pork, and canned beef, while poultry meat import remained stable. The decrease in meat consumption also led to a decrease in the import and export of live animals, affecting domestic animal slaughter. Preliminary data from the German Center for Agricultural Information (BZL) shows that Germany's meat self-sufficiency in 2021 increased by 2.5% to 121%, with pork at 132.4% and beef at 98.2%, and domestic production covering 96.7% of poultry demand.
