Zimbabwe's milk production experienced a significant increase of 14.3% in 2022, reaching over 91 million liters from 79.6 million liters in the previous year. This growth is attributed to an increase in the number of farmers engaging in dairy farming and government support, including the importation of heifers. Despite these efforts, the country still falls short of its target of 150 million liters and continues to import milk powder. The government has introduced a 5% duty on dairy imports to support the dairy recovery program and aims to further reduce import dependencies by setting limits on certain dairy products. The ultimate goal is to raise milk production to 150 million liters and expand the dairy herd to 60,000 by 2025, requiring an investment of US$75 million.
