The Ministry of Agriculture in Indonesia has temporarily halted the import of carcasses and adult lamb or mutton meat to shield local farmers from unfair price competition. This measure is aimed at sustaining the sustainability of the livestock sector and enhancing its competitiveness. The ministry is also taking steps to support farmers, such as engaging with the Indonesian Sheep and Goat Breeders Association and conducting surprise inspections on meat warehouses. Additionally, the ministry is urging importers to report their stocks transparently and to purchase local meat as needed. There are plans to harmonize regulations to reopen sheep and goat exports to Malaysia and Brunei by January 7, 2025, in order to absorb local production surplus and expand the international market.
