The Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries of South Korea is backing individual oyster farming and has shortlisted four sites for eco-friendly cave joint production facilities. This farming method, where oysters are grown individually, is more sustainable as it uses fewer buoys and is more profitable as the oysters can be sold with their shells. These oysters, which are triploid and do not bear eggs, are high in growth rate and obesity, making them valuable for consumption in China, Hong Kong, and Europe. The ministry's move is aimed at cutting buoy usage, boosting income for fishermen, and increasing exports of high-value seafood products.
