Morocco has surpassed Spain as the leading exporter of tomatoes from the European Union, now exporting more than twice the agreed limit and causing significant damage to the Spanish tomato sector. The majority of Moroccan tomatoes are exported to France, with Spanish and French companies playing a notable role in the production. The agricultural association, Coag, has called attention to the violation of export agreements and the lack of payment for tariff rates, amounting to 14 million euros annually. In response, Coag is advocating for the suspension of the free trade agreement, which they believe fails to obtain consent from Western Sahara and should therefore be declared illegal.
