In the first quarter of 2024, Morocco has overtaken Spain as the leading supplier of tomatoes to the European Union, exporting over 210 million kilos and accounting for more than 30% of the EU's total tomato imports. This represents a significant increase of over 13 million tonnes compared to the same period last year. The value of these exports reached over 363 million euros, up by more than five million euros from the previous year, due to the higher average selling price of Moroccan tomatoes in the EU market. The competitive advantage of Morocco lies in its proximity and ability to produce during the European winter, making it a crucial source of revenue for the North African country.
