The National Institute for Agrarian Innovation (INIA) of Peru has introduced two new high-quality crop varieties, quinoa INIA 446 Atipaq and potato INIA 334 Llapanchispaq, in Puno and the southern Andean region. These varieties are expected to boost the economy of over 12,000 family units by 90% due to their increased yield, pest and disease resistance, and high nutrient content. The quinoa variety is expected to yield 3-4 tons per hectare and is resistant to mildew and water stress, while the potato variety is expected to yield 20-30 tons per hectare and is rich in iron and zinc. Both crops are expected to improve market access and provide better farming profits.
