New Zealand has reported its first case of poultry infected with the highly pathogenic H7N6 strain of avian influenza. The infection was confirmed in chickens at the Mainland Poultry farm in the South Island, following contact with wild birds. No other poultry farms have reported sick or dead birds, and there are no concerns about human health or food safety. A strict quarantine zone has been established around the farm, and all 40,000 birds will be culled.
