A new sharing agreement on the Norwegian spring spawning herring stock between Norway and the Faroe Islands, the two states that fish half of the stock, has been signed after a nine-year hiatus. The agreement aims to promote sustainability and includes a quota allocation of 64.2% for Norway, 10% for the Faroe Islands, and an unallocated 25.8% for other countries like Iceland, Russia, and the EU. Both nations have reduced their quota by 22.8% compared to the previous year, adhering to the International Council for Exploration of the Sea's recommendation of a 24% stock reduction in 2023. The agreement also enables Faroese fishermen to sell their catch through the Norwegian salesman co-op and allows Norwegian fishers to catch a certain percentage of their blue whiting share in Faroese waters.
