[Korean Farmers' Newspaper, Reporter Kim Young-min] As the importance of producing seedlings suitable for the mechanization of onion planting (formal) work increases, the Rural Development Administration is promoting the spread of open-field seedling technology. The Rural Development Administration has been developing and disseminating a model for inland seedling greenhouses to establish technology for producing onion plug seedlings (a method of growing seedlings in individual cells containing a small amount of substrate) suitable for mechanization. This method has the advantage of being safer from weather disasters and soil-borne diseases during seedling growth compared to open fields. However, it is also true that the adoption has been slow due to the challenging conditions for seedling growth and the burden of facility costs, making it difficult for farmers to adopt.
