Between July and September 25, fourteen poultry flocks in the Gelderse Vallei region and a few other areas were infected with the infectious laryngotracheitis (ILT) wild-type virus. The disease causes respiratory symptoms with potential bleeding in the trachea, increased mortality, reduced feed intake, and decreased egg production. The severity of the symptoms can vary depending on the virus strain and the animals' sensitivity. Wild-type ILT is commonly found in hobby poultry. Further sequence analysis will be conducted to understand the virus better and its connection to the outbreaks in commercially kept poultry. To prevent the spread of the disease, strict hygiene measures are recommended, along with vigilance for symptoms and immediate contact with a veterinarian if suspected.
