The concept of the interrelation of water, energy, and food production in water-scarce regions will help the country reach a new level of sustainability in the agricultural sector. A comprehensive systems analysis shows that the agricultural sector of Pakistan is on an unsustainable development trajectory. Current resource-intensive agricultural methods cannot meet future food security needs without increasing the environmental burden. A new study published in the journal Agricultural Systems represents the first quantitative model for transitioning to sustainable agriculture through integrated management of the interrelation of water resources, energy, and food. This model has wide applicability in semi-arid regions around the world, according to its developers.
