Cocoa has been a key product in Peruvian exports, with the industry growing and becoming an alternative to coca leaves. The crop is supported by 120,000 producers and generates 600,000 jobs. The main regions for production are San Martín, Ucayali, and Junín. Peru is nearly tripling exports, projected to reach $1.1 billion this year, and is ranked 8th globally in organic cocoa production. The global cocoa market has seen fluctuations due to a drop in West African production, leading to a shortage and increased prices. Peru has benefited from this situation with a increase in cocoa bean export prices due to high global demand. The country also exports chocolate and cocoa is used in the cosmetics industry. Peruvian consumption of chocolate is currently at 580 grams per year, with a goal to raise it to 1 kg by 2025.
