The Philippines has banned the import of poultry and related products from California and Ohio due to outbreaks of avian flu, in an effort to protect local birds from possible infections. Although ships already in transit or loaded with merchandise before January 15 may still enter the country if the birds were slaughtered two weeks before the outbreaks, the ban will have an impact on the Philippines' poultry supply as the United States is the second largest supplier to the country. This ban is in line with similar prohibitions in other countries, including the EU and Singapore, due to outbreaks of avian flu.
