Portugal: pig slaughter increases by 4.7% between January and September of 2025

According to data published by the GPP, provided by INE as preliminary data, the slaughter of pigs in Portugal in the first nine months of 2025, when compared to the same period of the previous year, shows an increase of 4.7% in the total number of pigs slaughtered (+137,126 heads), rising from 2,928,857 pigs slaughtered between January and September 2024 to 3,065,983 in 2025. The slaughter weight also increased and its increase was 5.6%, which means that in 2025 pigs were slaughtered that were heavier than in 2024, having gone from 251,735.0 tons in 2024 to 265,907.4 tons this year. This gives an average carcass weight of 86.7kg in 2025 when in 2024 it was 86.0kg! Regarding piglets, there was an increase of 0.1% in the slaughter of this type of animal (+903 heads) in these 9 months of 2025 compared to the same period of 2024, since the number of heads slaughtered was 903,007 compared to 902,104 heads the previous year.
