In January 2024, Bihar, India, experienced a prolonged period of cold and fog that has significantly impacted Rabi crops such as potato, mustard, and lentil. The potato crop in Rohtas district was the most affected, with an estimated 20 to 25 per cent damage, while mustard crops suffered over 10 per cent damage. This weather anomaly, which saw temperatures fall 4.5°C below normal, has raised concerns among farmers and agricultural scientists about crop production. However, wheat, a major Rabi crop in the state, remains unaffected and is expected to yield a bumper harvest.
