Russian retail chains are keeping prices for socially significant goods, including bread, affordable despite a rise in wholesale prices, according to Igor Karavaev, Chairman of the Presidium of the Association of Retail Companies (AKORT). Despite a 2.4% increase in purchase prices for wheat bread, retail prices have only risen by 1.3%. X5 Group, which operates the Pyaterochka, Perekrestok, and Chizhik chains, has capped the markup on best-selling socially significant goods, including bread, at 5% since 2022. The company also pointed out that the markup is necessary to cover costs like equipment, logistics, and staff salaries.
