The Seychelles Fishing Authority has implemented a licensing system for its spanner crab fishery due to increased fishing pressure and declining catches, with 10 annual licenses to be issued to permit 350 traps per vessel and regulations prohibiting the taking of crabs less than 8 centimeters in carapace width. The development of the licensing system was done in consultation with fishermen and includes data-collection requirements to fill in knowledge gaps around the fishery. Commercial spanner crab fishing in the Seychelles began in 1986 and has seen an average catch between 2011 and 2020 of 30.5 metric tons, with a high of 90.2 MT in 2018.
