Sanlúcar de Barrameda in southern Spain is the largest sweet potato cultivation area in Europe, but growers have had to reduce acreage this year due to competition from other countries. The expected harvest this season is half of last year's, at about 5.5 million kilos. Part of the production is sold fresh, while the rest is processed for baby food and other products. The potential for consumption increase is huge, particularly in markets like Portugal and Latin America, where consumption is higher. Quality production is key to tapping into this potential. The Sanlúcar de Barrameda cooperatives have an annual turnover of around €80 million and most of the production is exported abroad.
