In the first half of December 2023, sugarcane crushing by plants in the Center-South of Brazil increased by 244.29% compared to the same period last year, totaling 19.08 million tons. A total of 184 production units operated in the region, with 79 units closing their milling for the fortnight, and another 83 are expected to close for the next fortnight. This increase in sugarcane crushing resulted in a 205.39% increase in sugar production and a 113.69% increase in ethanol production, with 27% of the total ethanol production coming from corn.
