Since 2022, Russia has faced a significant shift in its fish import market due to sanctions, leading to a stop in imports of chilled fish products like headless salmon carcasses and fillets from traditional suppliers such as the Faroe Islands and Norway. This has drastically reduced the share of imported salmon in Russia from nearly 90% in 2018 to 35% by the end of 2023, with Chile becoming the sole foreign supplier of salmon products to Russia. Despite these challenges, Russia has managed to increase its total import volumes of other fish and seafood by 18% by the end of 2023, reaching 656 thousand tons, thanks to diversifying its sources to include countries like China, Vietnam, Ecuador, Belarus, India, and Peru.
