Egypt's Ministry of Supply and Internal Trade is working towards achieving self-sufficiency in sugar, as directed by President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi. The country's sugar production is currently 2,850 million tons, made up of 1.7 million tons from beets and 900,000 tons from cane, with an additional 250 thousand tons from corn. The gap between consumption and local production has been reduced to 350 thousand tons, down from over one million tons previously. The government has ensured that sugar prices for consumers will not increase, and that prices are stable despite high global prices. The strategic sugar reserve is sufficient to last at least six months. The government aims to achieve self-sufficiency of sugar by 85% this year, with a goal of 100% by 2022.
