During the 2020-21 fiscal, India experienced a decline in tea exports, with volume dropping to 203.8 million kg from 241.31 million kg the previous year, as per the Tea Board of India. Despite the volume decrease, the value of exports increased slightly to Rs 5,311.53 crores from Rs 5,457.10 crores due to a higher unit price realization of Rs 260.64 per kg. The Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) countries and Iran were the largest importers, but there was a significant reduction in imports by Iran. The type of tea imported also shifted towards CTC tea, a processed form of black tea, rather than orthodox tea.
