Sri Lanka's tea production saw a significant decrease of 16% in 2022, dropping to 251.5 million kg, its lowest level since 1995. This decline is primarily due to a government-imposed ban on fertilizers and agrochemicals, as reported by the Sri Lanka Tea Board. However, with the lift of the ban in 2022, experts predict a rebound in production to 300 million kg in 2023. As the world's third-largest tea producer and a major exporter, this setback impacts a significant portion of the country's economy, including 135,000 workers and numerous plantation companies and factories. Despite the production challenges, tea export revenue in 2022 increased to $1.4 billion, up from $1.3 billion the previous year, due in part to price hikes.
