Since the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disaster, there was a belief in South Korea, referred to as the 'Cesium Black Sea Bass' ghost story, that Japanese seafood was contaminated and not safe to consume. However, reports have shown a significant increase in Japanese seafood imports to Korea, with a 13.2% rise to 18,106 tons in the first half of this year, marking the highest level in seven years. This increase is attributed to the price competitiveness of Japanese seafood and the short-lived impact of the 'cesium sea bass' rumor. Despite concerns, sales at the three major markets were higher than average from August of the previous year to February of this year, except for January. However, it is stressed that continuous and thorough inspections of seawater and imported fish are necessary to build public trust.
