The European Commission forecasts a recovery in the EU pork market in late 2024, despite a slight decline in the swine population. An increase in breeding sows and piglets suggests potential growth in slaughter volumes, although overall pork production is expected to decrease slightly with stable consumption. Poland's pork exports improved in early 2024, driven by sales to EU countries, while its swine population and slaughter volumes grew. However, since 2008, Poland's pork imports, mainly from the EU, have exceeded exports, rising by 5% in early 2024. Meanwhile, pig procurement prices in Poland and the EU have been increasing since February 2024, though Polish prices remain lower than mid-2023 levels. In May 2024, the average price for slaughter pigs in Poland was 7.68 zlotys/kg, slightly higher than the previous month but lower than May 2023, with prices showing a moderate increase in early June before declining later in the month.
