The European Parliament (EP) gave its approval this Wednesday to the new fishing agreement between the European Union (EU) and Côte d'Ivoire, which will allow the fleet of three member states, including Spain, to fish for tuna in the African country's waters for the next four years. The protocol, which will be in effect until June 5, 2029, passed with 520 votes in favor, 97 against, and 12 abstentions. It will allow 25 Spanish, French, and Portuguese freezer tuna seiners and seven surface longliners to catch up to 6,100 tons of tuna and other migratory species each year. The current fishing protocol has already been provisionally applied since June 6. In return for access to the African country's waters, the EU will pay 740,000 euros annually, of which 305,000 euros will guarantee access rights. The remaining 435,000 euros will be used to support the development of sustainable fishing in Côte d'Ivoire. In particular, the aim is to help the growth of the small-scale fishing sector ...
