The European Union (EU) and the United Kingdom have announced a ban on the import of female cattle from Brazil for the next 15 days due to the use of estradiol in timed artificial insemination. This decision is part of a broader effort to prevent hormone residues in meat, with the ban likely to be lifted only after Brazil can prove that female cattle have not been treated with the hormone. The measure, effective from October 6, follows similar restrictions already in place in Argentina and Uruguay. The EU's move is expected to have minimal immediate impact on exports but could pose challenges for Brazilian corrals with slaughterhouse contracts. This development is accompanied by concerns over the EU's proposed Regulation (EU) 2023/1115 on forest-free chains, which the Southern Agricultural Council (CAS) has called detrimental to international trade and is seeking to delay until 2025.
