Spain's garlic cultivation has experienced a significant decline, with over a 30% reduction in the last two campaigns compared to 2022, and purple garlic cultivation dropping below 40% for the first time. The National Association of Garlic Producers and Marketers (ANPCA) identifies multiple challenges such as rising production costs, water access issues, labor difficulties, and complications from the CAP affecting land leasing. The sector is also contending with EU and national agricultural policies, especially the removal of phytosanitary defenses. ANPCA has proposed to the European Commission the authorization of new pest control materials by MRL zones to streamline registration and has presented a Strategic Plan to address production management, process analysis, and external factor control. Representing a significant portion of the garlic marketed in Spain and Europe, ANPCA is a major player in the European garlic industry.
