In 2022, the price of areca nut in Nghe An province, Vietnam, dropped significantly, leading to revenue losses for growers. However, since February 2023, prices have increased three to four times following Chinese demand. This fluctuation in price is due to the complete reliance of areca nut output on the Chinese market. Currently, traders are buying young areca nuts at high prices, providing an additional income source for growers. However, the Department of Crop Production has advised against mass expansion of areca cultivation due to the unpredictable market forces and the fact that areca is not a staple crop.
