A new variety of catfish, named SilGen, has been developed after a decade of research by a Budapest-based organization, with the help of five leading fish farming and research companies. The new catfish species is quick to adapt, grows rapidly, and is disease resistant, making it a potential competitor to salmon. The project, which lasted 24 months, established a mass production system for premium quality freshwater catfish and aims to use ecological aspects, environmental protection, and culinary qualities in its marketing. The catfish, with its white meat and firm texture, is seen as an alternative to cod, salmon, and tuna.
