A new variety of Japanese plum, Sweet Peeketah, with characteristics such as crispness, sweetness, and extended post-harvest life, is being developed in Chile. The fruit, which is currently in its third year of commercial exports, is planted across the Metropolitan, O'Higgins, and Maule regions in Chile, covering 110 hectares and with plans to expand to 180 hectares. The plum, known for its large size, balanced acidity, and natural bloom, has received positive feedback from markets, especially China, which accounts for 92% of shipments totaling 1,300 tons. The challenge now lies in promoting awareness of the Sweet Peeketah variety among consumers and markets.
