Indonesia, the world's largest palm oil producer, has a annual production of 5.8 million tons of Palm Kernel Meal (PKM) from its palm oil industry. Due to its nutritional content, PKM is a potential source of energy and protein for monogastric animals. However, its high fiber content makes it unsuitable for their digestive systems. To improve its nutritional quality, various technologies such as physical, chemical and enzymatic treatments are used. Despite these benefits, the use of PKM in the feed industry is only 2-3% due to preferences for feed color and business risks. There is a need for increased collaboration between researchers, universities, government, and private sector to scale up research on the use of PKM.
