The main North Sea herring fishery is set to begin, with boats from Scotland and Shetland preparing to fish from the only independently certified sustainable herring fishery in the north-east Atlantic by the Marine Stewardship Council. Herring is touted as a delicious and nutritious fish, rich in heart-healthy omega 3 fatty acids, minerals, and vitamins. The Scottish Pelagic Processors’ Association and the Scottish Pelagic Sustainability Group have emphasized the industry's commitment to sustainability, with participation in the MSC program and various science initiatives to monitor fish stocks. The UK health authorities recommend consuming two servings of fish weekly, one of which should be an oily fish like herring.
