The Tonda Francescana Hazelnut project, developed by the University of Perugia and now managed by the Foundation for Agricultural Education of Perugia, is gaining popularity in Italy and abroad. The variety is noted for its late bud break and flowering, making it less susceptible to late frosts due to climate change. The Foundation uses leading micropropagation centers for the in vitro multiplication of the Tonda Francescana and cultivates grafted plants on Turkish hazel rootstocks, reducing environmental impact and saving on machinery and labor. They are also working on selecting individuals of Turkish hazel for hazelnut seedlings that can adapt to water scarcity. In October, they plan to introduce new generation grafted plants with the highest certification available. The Foundation has already planted over 300 thousand small plants of the Tonda Francescana in Serbia.
