Two Greek extra virgin olive oils, Sitia Lasithiou Kritis and Kalamata, have been granted protected status in India as geographical indications (GI) after receiving Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) certifications from the European Union. This means that the oils are now protected from imitations and misuse of their names in the Indian market. The approval of the two olive oils as GIs in India is seen as an important marketing tool, as India is expected to be a target market for Greek exports in the future.
